New Zealand has been an active and well-respected member of the IMO since 1960 and attached great importance to the work of the IMO. With a remote geographic location in the South Pacific and an export-based economy, New Zealand has a keen interest in maritime transport and the protection of the marine environment.




Maritime New Zealand is governed by an independent Board appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport.Maritime New Zealand is responsible for seafarer licensing.


Where is the school located?

The New Zealand Maritime School is located in downtown Auckland city, on the waterfront. The school moved to the city from the main Manukau Institute of Technology campus in 1997 and takes up 3 floors of the old Union House building at 2 Commerce Street, Auckland. It is approximately 20kms drive north of the main Manukau Institute of Technology campus in Otara.


Is there accommodation at the Maritime School?

There is no accommodation at the Maritime School but there are a number of places nearby which we can provide information on. The nearest accommodation for seafarers is the Sailors Home which is a few minutes walk along Commerce Street. There is hostel accommodation available a few minutes walk from the NZ Maritime School.
